Stay Healthy While Traveling

10 12 2009

With the recent outbreaks of the Swine Flu and bed bugs, travelers need to take some precautions. Many cruiselines are being plagued by these outbreaks along with world travelers.

Cruise ships are not the only mode of transportation suffering from outbreaks of swine flu and bedbugs or other parasites. Proper sanitation is the only way to avoid these outbreaks, but often airplanes and cruise ships do not get a thorough enough sanitation. Proper sanitation of every airplane and cruise ship would require days of labor and would literally bankrupt these companies.

Because this is the case, it is necessary for you to take matters into your own hands when it comes to sanitation during your travels. ou should use these constantly when traveling. These companies rarely have the time or staff to do proper sanitation, so it would be foolhardy to be relying on them for your safety in this matter.

If there is any doubt, Use alcohol wipes on every thing you touch, before you touch it, then on your hands afterward. Likewise, you should be using hand sanitizer constantly, the nice thing about hand sanitizer is that the alcohol dries quickly and no one will be able to tell you are using it, unless they see the bottle in your pocket. In order to protect yourself from viruses and parasites, you should use these protocols religiously.

It is also a good idea to consult your physician before your trip to get preventative measures. Swine flu vaccines are available and should be taken as a precaution before leaving on your trip or vacation. You will notice that they tingle on your scalp and more sensitive areas, this means they are working, and hopefully will protect you from an outbreak.

A plastic mattress cover is of the greatest importance if you start to feel “bitten” while in bed. Plastic mattress covers that zip up and enclose the entire mattress are the best option, but may not be available. Just be sure to get a protective barrier between you and the mattress, and remember that these bugs can travel through cloth, only plastic will protect you.

Unsafe drinking water and improperly cooked foods are the biggest dangers when traveling abroad. Be mindful of Salmonella and malaria while in third world countries. Make certain the seal is intact on your purchased bottled water. Any foods ordered should be cooked thoroughly, if it looks under done, send it back for more heat. Harmful bacteria is decimated with high temperatures of cooking. These days you just cannot be too safe, so use your commen sense and stay away from raw foods that you have not seen prepared.

Luckily swine flu and bed bugs are, for the most part, curable. The most important thing to do is have fun, so just be safe and try not to dwell on what could go wrong.
